‘Planning is so important when it comes to any architectural project. Being clear from the start is the key to a successful outcome. For me the moment when a design concept becomes more concrete and the vision starts to crystallise, in the form of a drawing, plan or rendering, is very exciting. Minky Lidchi designed this ambitious new build for a retired couple (and their often-visiting extended family) on a large farm in Tulbagh. A hacienda-style central courtyard offers a weather barrier from extreme elements of heat, wind and rain, while visual penetration throughout the house makes the most of the incredible vistas of the siting. Apart from generous living and sleeping areas, the house accommodates an office, and can be cleverly sectioned off for flexibility.
